The Invasion Ecology of Sleeper Populations: Prevalence, Persistence, and Abrupt Shifts

چکیده

ABSTRACT It is well established that nonnative species are a key driver of global environmental change, but much less known about the underlying drivers outbreaks themselves. In present article, we explore concept and implications sleeper populations in invasion dynamics. Such persist at low abundance for years or even decades—a period during which they often go undetected have negligible impact—until triggered by an factor to become highly abundant disruptive. Population irruptions commonly misinterpreted as recent arrival species, belie more complex history inconspicuous occurrence followed abrupt shift ecological impact. identify mechanisms can trigger their irruption, invasive risk assessment management.

The persistence of populations facing climate shifts and harvest

Many species are expected to shift their geographic distribution as climates change, and yet climate change is only one of a suite of stressors that species face. Species that might, in theory, be able to shift rapidly enough to keep up with climate velocity (the rate and direction that isotherms move across the landscape) may not in actuality be able to do so when facing the cumulative impacts...

Invasion and Persistence of Infectious Agents in Fragmented Host Populations

One of the important questions in understanding infectious diseases and their prevention and control is how infectious agents can invade and become endemic in a host population. A ubiquitous feature of natural populations is that they are spatially fragmented, resulting in relatively homogeneous local populations inhabiting patches connected by the migration of hosts. Such fragmented population...

The ecology of gaze shifts

We present a phenomenological model for the generation of human visual scanpaths. Successions of saccadic eye-movements are treated as realizations of a stochastic jump process in a random quenched salience eld. EEciency of the process is deened in terms of convergence properties of the time dependent probability of xating a region in the visual environment. Based on the assumption that the vis...
